Form Drawing
What is form drawing?
Form drawing is a technique commonly used in Waldorf Schools to help children learn shapes, develop spatial skills, set the base for and improve handwriting, and learn about geometic shapes and how they can be created, as well as how to use color to create patterns. It consists of a series basic forms which will build into increasingly complex geometric shape and finally a complex pattern composed of the shapes that have been learned. Drawing forms, while it may seem simple at first glance, involves developing the use of a steady hand, good concentration skills and a firm grasp of the use of lines and curves. These lines and curves are the foundation for all things both drawn and written.
Level 1
Themes for the Level One Class include Fairy Tales, Fables and nature. At this level we begin with very simple forms including running forms and symmetry forms that focus on perfecting lines and curves.
Level 2
Themes for the Level Two Class include mythology of the Norse. At this level we begin to study more advanced forms, including braided forms as well as focusing on art terminology with things such as color theory.
Level 3
Themes for the Level Three Class include the stories of Mesopotamia and India. At this level forms will begin to use shading and drawing tools to create forms.
Level 4
Themes for the Level Four Class include Greece and Rome and Geometry. At this level we will be working on the most advanced forms as well as incorporating Geometry in order to create our forms.
